Virginia Driving Records Request Information
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles maintains the driving record of all Virginia Residents with a driver’s license. The driving record maintained by the Virginia DMV includes your driving history such as:
- Personal information such as name, address and license application date
- Current driver’s license status
- Suspensions or revocations
- Traffic violations
- Traffic accidents
- Demerit points
- DUI records
People other than you who can request your Virginia driving record include:
- Insurance or car rental companies
- Employers
- Government or law enforcement agencies
- Courts
- Individuals with written permission from you
You can make Virginia Driving Records Request for four different types of driving records. The five different types of Virginia driving records that you can request include:
Personal Use Driving Record:
The personal use driving record includes your 11-year driving history and is meant solely for personal use.
Employment driving record:
The employment driving record includes your 7-year driving history and is meant for authorize agents, potential employers and government agencies
Insurance driving record:
The insurance driving record includes your 5-year driving history and is used for insurance purposes.
Habitual offender restoration driving record:
The habitual offender restoration driving record includes your 11-year driving history and is available for court petitions
There are three ways of making Virginia Driving Records Request—online, by mail, and in person. Furthermore, you can obtain a copy of your driving record online through public databases.
In person
To make an in person request for your Virginia driving records, you’ll need:
- Visit Virginia DMV office
- Fill out and submit Virginia Information Request form
- Pay $8 fee for uncertified driving record or $13 for certified driving record
By mail
To request your Virginia driving record by mail, you’ll need to:
- Fill out and mail Virginia Information Request form to: Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

Online
To make an online request for your Virginia driving records, you’ll need to:
- Visit the Virginia DMV online portal
- Provide your driver’s license or social security number
- Pay through credit card $7 fee for uncertified driving record or $12 for certified driving record
