West Virginia Federal Courts – Locations, Hours, Phone Numbers

There are two districts in the West Virginia Federal Courts. There is the Court for the Northern District and the Court for the Southern District. All appeals from these courts are presented to the Fourth Circuit. The only two exceptions are those cases that concern patent claims and claims against the government of the United States.

The Federal Court for the Northern District has court hearings held at Wheeling, Martinsburg, Elkins, and Clarksburg. Counties for Martinsburg include Berkeley, Morgan, Mineral, Jefferson, and Hampshire. Counties for Clarksburg include Taylor, Ritchie, Preston, Pleasants, Monongalia, Marion, Harrison, Gilmer, Doddridge, Calhoun, and Braxton. Counties for Wheeling include Wetzel, Tyler, Ohio Marshall, Hancock, and Brooke. Counties for Elkins include Webster, Upshur, Tucker, Randolph, Pocahontas, Pendleton, Lewis, Hardy, Grant, and Barbour.

The Federal Court for the Southern District has several counties, and courts hearings are held in Huntington, Charleston, Bluefield, and Beckley. Counties in Huntington include Wayne, Putnam, Mason, and Cabell. Counties in Charleston include Wood, Wirt, Roane, Nicholas, Mingo, Logan, Lincoln, Kanawha, Jackson, Fayette, Clay, and Boone. Counties in Bluefield include Monroe, McDowell, and Mercer. Counties in Beckley include Wyoming, Summers, Raleigh, and Greenbrier.

The two separate websites for the federal courts are extremely helpful in ensuring that you are able to complete many of the tasks without needing to physically visit the courthouse location. There are tons of things on offer for the residents of West Virginia, including a mapped out electronic filing system and an electronic court case locator.
