The Nebraska Federal Courts are commonly known as the Nebraska Supreme Courts. It has a rich history in contributing to the justice system of Nebraska and the United States. Below, there are four things to know about the Nebraska Federal Courts.

Nebraska Federal Courts Composition

The Nebraska Federal Courts are the highest court in the states, and it supersedes the Nebraska Court of Appeals too. It is made up of seven judges. One judge, also known as a justice, is the chief justice, and the other six are the associate justices. Nebraska uses the Missouri Plan to initially pick the judges, so the governor of Nebraska does the appointing. Afterwards, retention votes are held for each judge to attain an additional six-year term. Nebraska, joined only by North Dakota, requires a five of seven vote to rule a legislative provision unconstitutional.

The Origin of the Nebraska Federal Courts

The Nebraska Federal Court was founded by way of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, and it was initially named the Territorial Supreme Court. Originally, the court was occupied by a panel of judges made up of 15 males. In 1938, the number was reduced to three. The current count of seven judges did not happen until the state constitution was amended in 1908. Now, as stated above, the Nebraska Federal Court selects and elects judges using a form of the Missouri Plan.
