Louisiana Federal Courts – Locations, Phone Numbers, Hours

There are four major Louisiana Federal Courts. There is the United States Court of Appeals that has jurisdiction in the district of Louisiana, along with Texas and Mississippi. Then there is the Court for Eastern District, for Western District, and for Middle District of Louisiana.

Court of Appeals

The United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit holds jurisdiction regarding appeals over many courts, particularly in the southern districts. There are 12 other courts like this in the country, which comprise of 17 judges.

Louisiana Court Eastern District

The Court for Eastern District is based in New Orleans. The court has jurisdiction over civil actions that arise under the constitution laws and treaties of the United States. Appeals from the district are taken to the Court of Appeals of Louisiana for the Fifth circuit. The Eastern District Court has appellate jurisdiction over a limited category of decrees, orders, and judgments.

Louisiana Court Middle District

The Court for Middle District of Louisiana includes the West Feliciana, West Baton Rouge, Saint Helena, Pointe Coupee, Livingston, Iberville, East Feliciana, East Baton Rouge, and Ascension. The United States Attorney’s Office for the district represents United States in litigation and civil cases in the court. The Middle District court is held in the United States Courthouse in Baton Rouge. Court of Appeals for the fifth circuit holds jurisdiction over it.

Louisiana Court Western District

The Western District Court has jurisdiction of around two thirds of Louisiana. The court is located in Shreveport, Monroe, Lake Charles, Lafayette, and Alexandria. All appeals from this court are taken to the Court of Appeals, the only exceptions are the claims against the government, and patent claims.
