Iowa Federal Courts – Locations, Hours & Phone Numbers

There are two Iowa Federal Courts. There is the Northern District Court of Iowa, and the Southern District Court. There used to be a single court for both districts, but they were divided to facilitate processes later on.

The court for the northern district has 52 counties under its jurisdiction. Appeals are presented to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Note that this does not apply for patent claims and any claims against the government – these two are specifically taken care of by the Federal Circuit.

Currently, the Northern Court has two chief judges, two magistrate judges, and two district judges. The headquarters of the count is located in Cedar Rapids, while Sioux City has a satellite courthouse.

The court for the southern district holds jurisdiction over 47 of the counties. All cases are appealed to in the eighth circuit Court of Appeals, save for patent cases and claims against government, which are handled by the Federal Circuit. The court was subdivided and established in 1882.

The courts of Iowa have both official sites for the Northern and Southern districts. The northern district court of Iowa site has resources on the different locations of the courts and directions to get there. However it is possible that what you need from the courthouse you will be able to find online on this site. You can fill out forms for attorney bar admissions, CJA, and CLE directly from this portal.

You can access information on jurors, attorneys, aspiring attorneys, and other information regarding the district community that is posted here as well, like conferences, and putting to light issues that need attention.

The site for the southern district court has information on the Criminal Justice Act, its past seminars, rates, dates etc. Residents of Iowa State can also learn the procedure of representing themselves in a case where they choose not to hire an attorney.
