Alabama Federal Courts – Locations, Hours, Phone Numbers
Alabama Federal Courts are state federal courts. What is a state federal court? A state federal court is federal court based in a particular state. Compared to a state court, a state federal court has more extensive jurisdiction. What is jurisdiction? Jurisdiction refers to whether a court has the power to listen to a particular case. Jurisdiction is what empowers courts.
Let’s say, a citizen of Arizona sued an Alabama citizen in a case involving a real estate transaction that occurred in Illinois. Now, since the parties live there, the case could be brought in the state court of Arizona or Alabama. Furthermore, since the concerned property is located in Illinois, the case could also be brought in the state court of Illinois. However, the parties cannot take the case to the state court of Iowa because neither party lives there. Furthermore, the property at dispute isn’t located in Iowa. Therefore, the state court of Illinois has nothing to do with the case. Since this case falls out of its jurisdiction, the Illinois state court will reject hearing it.
On the other hand, a federal state court has more extensive jurisdiction. The boundaries of state courts limit their jurisdiction but federal state courts cover all the states within the U.S. As far as Alabama Federal Court is concerned, there are three federal courts located in the state. These include the US District Court for the Middle District of Alabama, another for the Northern District, and the third for the Southern District.
The US District Court for the Northern District of Alabama is held at Anniston, Gadsden, Florence, Huntsville, Decatur, and Birmingham. The court for Middle District is held at Opelika, Montgomery, and Dothan, while the US District Court for the Southern District of Alabama is held at Selma and Mobile.
Apart from taking a case to them, you can obtain certain information from Alabama federal courts as well. The information you can obtain includes court case pleadings, filings, dockets, opinions etc. You can obtain this information both online and in person.
